WHAT IS SPORT FISHING?

Sport fishing is a water sport in which anglers compete among themselves to catch a variety of different target fishes.  Fishing as a sport, however, is of considerable antiquity. The most common form of recreational fishing is done with a rod, reel, line, hooks and any one of a wide range of baits. Other devices, commonly referred to as terminal tackle, are also used to affect or complement the presentation of the bait to the targeted fish. Some examples of terminal tackle include weights, floats, and swivels. Lures are frequently used in place of bait. Some hobbyists make handmade tackle themselves, including plastic lures and artificial flies. The practice of catching or attempting to catch fish with a hook is known as angling. The equipment used for the sport are, rods, reels, lines, hooks and baits. Most competitions are conducted in deep waters, so a fishing boat is required.

HISTORY

The sport originated out of recreational fishing. Fishing, also called angling, the sport of catching fish, freshwater or saltwater, typically with rod, line, and hook. During the 16th century the work was much read, and was reprinted many times. Treatyse includes detailed information on fishing waters, the construction of rods and lines, and the use of natural baits and artificial flies. It also includes modern concerns about conservation and angler etiquette. Like hunting, fishing originated as a means of providing food for survival. Sport fishing competitions can be contested individually or in teams. In competitions, points are  awarded for each fish caught. The points awarded for each catch varies based on the weight of the fish, and their species. Some competitions also factor in the strength of the fishing line used to calculate scores, which results in teams using thinner and weaker lines ending up with more points for an identical catch. The team that score the most number of points is declared as the winner. One of humankind’s earliest tools was the predecessor of the fishhook: a gorge—that is, a piece of wood, bone, or stone 1 inch (2.5 cm) or so in length, pointed at both ends and secured off-center to the line. The gorge was covered with some kind of bait. When a fish swallowed the gorge, a pull on the line wedged it across the gullet of the fish, which could then be pulled in.
